 In the 1980's, American pencil makers wanted a special way to tell people that their pencils contained Chinese graphite since the best graphite in the world at that time came from China. Because the color yellow is associated with royalty and respect in China, the American pencil manufacturers started painting their pencils bright yellow to communicate this “regal” feeling and association with China. The trend continues on until today.

Hawaii is the number one country producing pineapples. Pineapples are a used as a symbol of hospitality.

Gift Wraps with a Personal Touch

A gift becomes extra special when wrapped in a wrapper that you made yourself. Use magazines or the newspaper, comic page or excess cloth material. Your family can even come together to create your own designs.

To make cloth gift sacks, fold the cloth in half and sew up one bottom and the other side. Leave the top open, insert your gift, and fasten a ribbon. Another idea is to print flattened leaves on paper. First, paint the underside of the leaf with soapy water then paint it with water color. Place the leaf carefully on the paper you want to print and cover it with a clean piece of scrap paper. Rub firmly but carefully until the paint has transferred to the paper. Remove the scrap paper and use tweezers to remove the leaf.
